Please watch: “AMERICA’S BORDER PROBLEM: WALL OR NO WALL?”
There are essentially two passages in the OT, Isaiah 17 and Jeremiah 49 that some use to demonstrate a future event that entails the total destruction of Damascus.
In Isaiah 17:1 it reads, “An oracle concerning Damascus. Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city and will become a heap of ruins.”
However, upon examining the entire chapter of Isaiah 17, and throughout the next few chapters, it seems Isaiah is describing the coming destruction of Damascus in the 8th century BC under the Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser, and then later in 722 BC, Samaria, the capital of Israel would later be attacked by the Assyrians just as Isaiah prophesied it would be.
So although the language seems compelling to think Isaiah and Jeremiah are mentioning a future destruction of Damascus, it doesn’t seem to be the case. Now that doesn’t mean Syria won’t be destroyed and face judgment.
However, I do want to mention another striking prophecy that (I believe) references Russia and Iran found in Ezekiel 38-39. This is referred as the Gog and Magog invasion. In this prophecy, we see the Prince of Rosh (or Russia) lead many Islamic nations to destroy Israel. Now there are some nations mentioned in this passage, such as: Iran, Turkey, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Libya, but elsewhere in Ezek. 38 it says, “there will be many other peoples with you.” Perhaps Syria is one of the nations to join Russia to attempt to destroy Israel off the face of the earth.
But I would say this regarding Syria. And all that we are hearing about in the daily news. Syria is a big player in the Middle East. It sits on Israel’s northern border, and is a very strategic place to come through and invade Israel.
The bottom line is this—You can’t have peace in the Middle East without the cooperation of Syria. Currently, there have been an estimated 7 million Syrians who have fled or been rescued from the dictatorship of the Assad regime.
So, let’s continue to pray for the protection of the Syrian people, and that peace will come to the Middle East. And please, find ways to support certain organizations that are helping to care for the people on the ground.
